Isabelle Leroux takes part in ICC France Intellectual Property Commission's Blockchain Webinar

Posting Date: 2020.07.17

The Intellectual Property Commission of ICC France, presided by Martine Karsenty-Ricard, gathered professionals of multiple sectors to intervene on the subject of intellectual property in the field of Blockchain technology. The webinar was designed to raise awareness of Blockchain technology and underline its advantages in the field of IP protection and defence.

ICC France invited three speakers to discuss this topic: William Fauchoux, CEO of BlockchainyourIP, began by explaining the basics behind Blockchain Technology and emphasized its particularities of decentralisation, resilience, and traceability. Isabelle Leroux, IP&T Lawyer at Dentons, then explained how this technology could apply to IP law and the defence of certain intellectual property rights, as well as offered country comparisons. Finally, Sylvain Dorol, Bailiff at Venezia Huissiers, brought the discussion to an end by exposing how to prove the existence and scope of an intellectual property right that would have been protected by the Blockchain technology. He also went through the role of the bailiff in the existence of an intellectual property right protected by Blockchain technology.

When discussing the potential applications of Blockchain in IP law, Isabelle Leroux states: “Copyright is not the only potential application of Blockchain. It can be used for the protection of know-how and in the right of patent prior personal possession. The benefit is to be able to put all kinds of confidential data on the Blockchain, and then to be able to communicate them to one or more persons in secret, with a determined and determinable content.”

Blockchain technology can also allow the protection of certain effective and indisputable rights, particularly in the event of litigation. This technology has undeniable advantages in terms of confidentiality, integrity guarantees and traceability, and the use of this technology offers intellectual property players real and multiple opportunities to better protect unregistered assets of the company, based on tailor made strategies.
